Melanie Canning is a psychologist, resource therapist and hypnotherapist, completing her resource therapy training of 100 hours plus with Dr Gordon Emmerson.

Melanie Canning has completely embraced the world of resource therapy and has incorporated it fully into her private practise as her primary mode of therapy. Melanie has found success utilising resource therapy with presentations that range from clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, anorexia, dissociative identity disorder and borderline personality disorder through to anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression and drug and alcohol use, gambling and other addictions. Melanie is a qualified trainer and supervisor with Resource Therapy International.

Melanie works in private practise from offices in Hastings Victoria as well as at Headspace in Frankston. Melanie commenced her experience as a probationary psychology at Odyssey House; a therapeutic community in Lower Plenty where she gained knowledge  and understanding of drug use, dependance and treatment. Melanie was concurrently working at an NGO youth detox in coburg at this time before leaving both positions to commence working at Albert Road Clinic; a private psychiatric hospital. Melanie further refined her knowledge and treatment of patients with severe mental health issues including borderline personality disorder, dissociative identity disorder, bi-polar and schizophrenia as well as the more generalised diagnosis’ of depression and anxiety.

From here Melanie gained further experience in the non government sector and worked to implement a program designed to focus on adults who had diagnosed mental health issues, were homeless, engaged in drug or alcohol use as well as other complex needs. Melanie then moved onto specalise in drug and alcohol counselling and took a role working with mandated clients before starting a family.

On returning to the workforce Melanie felt there must be something more than what the techniques of cognitive behavoural therapy and mindfulness could offer and she sort an approach that worked at the base of the symptoms people presented with, or from within the issue itself, to dissolve and resolve the underlying angst that people experienced. Melanie thus moved to complete her clinical training in hypnotherapy at the Academy of Hypnotic Science and completed Gordon Emmerson's then termed ego state therapy.

Melanie has fallen in love with the approach taught by Gordon Emmerson which has been recently redefined and renamed as resource therapy, a name coined after the approach taught by Dr Emmerson grew to develop some fundamental differences to its father approach ego state therapy.

Melanie has completed both the foundation and clinical qualification as well as the advanced clinical and is now a trainer and supervisor in resource therapy as she continues to refine and enhance her own knowledge and techniques. Melanie continues to have ongoing supervision with Dr Emmerson and is passionate about continuing to grow this framework.
